The Last Drink

by Heather Castillo

He walks in silence
In the middle of the night
Searching for a drink

How did this happen
Once the life of the party
Now scrounging for booze

Dingy white jacket
tattered and torn at the ends
used to be brilliant

His smugness is gone
No one looks up to him now
Humbled, broken man

His wife emerges
Holding his martini glass
"Would you like one dear?"

No answer needed
She mixes one up, double
Hands it to him fast

He hangs his head back
Down his throat without a hitch
No taste to savor

Out comes the pistol
"That will be your last drink dear."
Bullet pentrates

Pistol lowers slow
Jenkins laying in silence
last drink still in hand
